“I’m Sawsan, wife, mother, Childbirth Educator (CBI) and Doula (AMANI). I’m also a student Midwife Assistant (BAI) and Breastfeeding Counsellor (CBI).”
Like many of you visiting this page, I wanted a natural birth in Egypt when I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago. I found that the need for support to make this choice in Cairo is great, the encouragement almost non-existent. I’ve been through it all. Birth in this country, like many other countries, is a highly medicalised event and mothers, new and experienced, are afraid of it.
Nevertheless, I’m happy the effort of the handful of CBEs and Doulas in Cairo and Alexandria is paying off and the situation is gradually improving. More than ever, we have doctors who are willing to support mother’s choices at birth and welcome her doula as part of her birth team.
I’ve learned from my birth experience, as well as from the many couples I encountered in my practice as a Childbirth Educator and Doula, that wishing for a positive birth experience is not enough; it requires education, preparation and support. A positive birth experience does not have to be a natural one; it’s a birth experience in which the mom and dad feel respected and involved in the decision making. The mom feels safe, loved, supported and is treated with dignity. The dad feels confident and capable of looking after his wife and child.
This is why I started Positive Birth Cairo and it is my hope that more and more couples experience a positive birth, no matter how it unfolds.

What’s a Childbirth educator?
A CBE is the person who trains expectant couples on the normal physiology of labor and birth; equips them with the tools and skills to prepare and plan for the birth of their desire; and to deal with any unexpected events of birth.
